Falling Skies comienza en el caótico mundo posterior a un ataque alienígena a la Tierra que ha dejado a la mayoría del planeta completamente incapacitado. Pasados seis meses de la violenta invasión inicial, los pocos supervivientes que han logrado salvarse de la masacre se han ido reuniendo a las afueras de las principales ciudades para empezar la difícil tarea de empezar a combatir a los invasores extraterrestres. Cada día es una prueba de supervivencia. Los soldados, ahora todos ellos civiles, trabajan para proteger a la gente que tienen a su cargo al tiempo que tratan de comenzar la campaña de insurgencia contra la fuerza alienígena invasora.
